The shooting world lost a great man today. Shooting Star Tom Knapp passed away this afternoon. Tom reinvented exhibition shooting almost 30 years after the passing of Herb Parsons. Tom was an inspiration to generations of shooters and he will be missed.

Our thoughts are with Tom's family and friends.

The article linked below was written by Dave Miller last year covering Tom's first two years of shooting with CZ.

The Tacticool is a tactically-inspired version of our 455 Varmint, fitted into a laminate stock that's finished in black.

Built as a tactical trainer, the Tacticool has a number of ergonomic features that make it a joy to shoot. The stock has ambidextrous palm swells on its pistol grip and an especially high Monte Carlo to accommodate larger scopes. The beavertail forend is great for riding bags or affixing a bipod for precision shooting in the field, with a gentle butt hook to provide excellent control.
In recent weeks and months, laws have been passed at the state level, with many more under consideration at both the state and federal levels.

The anti-liberty, anti-gun crowd has media on its side, spreading misinformation and exploiting victims of tragedy in an effort to advance an agenda that infringes on the rights of lawful citizens. Don't let the media speak for you, tell your elected officials where you stand on the issues. Click here to quickly and easily write your state and federal legislators. With it, you can write your own message to your representatives or use the one prepared by the NSSF.
There are a handful of people who believe that 'sensible' gun laws are a solution. In his recent blog, Bobby Holik writes about the loss of personal freedoms that his family experienced in Czechoslovakia. The parallels should concern even the most 'sensible' among our citizenry.
Both the 527 Varmint (heavy barrel) and 527 American (sporter weight) models will soon be available in the new .17 Hornet chambering.

The CZ 527 is a true micro length Mauser style action featuring controlled round feed, a detachable magazine, forged receiver, hammer forged barrel, integrated 16mm scope bases and the CZ single set trigger system, fully adjustable for creep, over-travel and weight.

From Hornady.com:
Based on the 22 Hornet cartridge case, the 17 Hornet propels the 20 gr V-MAX at 3,650 fps. Fueled with Superformance propellent, the 17 Hornet Superformance Varmint is economically priced, and delivers the trajectory of a traditional 55 gr 223 load, but is a pleasure to shoot with the felt recoil of a 22 WMR. The 17 Hornet – an economical, fun .17 caliber centerfire cartridge that puts the STING on varmints out to 300 yards!
• 3,650 fps muzzle velocity with a 20 gr. V-MAX bullet
• Same C.O.L. as the 22 Hornet – uses the existing action
• Trajectory comparable to a traditional 55 gr 223 Rem, but the felt recoil of a 22 WMR
The O-Class was dominated by competitors shooting CZ rifles in the2012 National Rimfire Sporter Championships at Camp Perry. Congratulations to Charles Opalewski II who won the O-Class with a 580-18X Aggregate score. Charles wasn't the only one shooting a CZ rimfire at the matches this year, in fact 8 of the top 10 in the Open Sight (O-Class) division were shooting CZ including 2nd Place Don Moore (also high Senior) and Jessica Hudson who took High Junior, High Lady and High 4-H Shooter as well.. In fact over half of the 116 competitors who declared the make of their rifle were shooting CZ.
We'd also like to extend our congratulations to Ron Villanueva, the top CZ Shooter in T-Class (telescopic sights) who came in at 6th place.

In 1820 Charles Caleb Colton wrote the words "Imitation is the sincerest of flattery." Applying this adage to the handgun world, we find that the CZ 75 and the M1911 are the most flattered semi-auto handguns ever made. The CZ 75 is the second most copied handgun design ever; surpassed in number of imitations only by the M1911.

Frantisek Koucky was the designer behind the CZ 75. Koucky authored and filed four patents during the model's development from 1974-1975 to protect the design. The CZ 75 was identified by the Czechoslovak military early in development as a possible replacement for the then-current-issue CZ Model 52. Because the new handgun had potential as a military project, the decision was made to keep the patents filed for the design "classified." As undisclosed state secrets, the patents were only valid inside Czechoslovakia.

Politically, the 9mm cartridge caused problems for the CZ 75. No Warsaw Pact countries used the 9mm, and even worse, NATO countries used it in both pistols and submachine guns. In the end, because the CZ 75 was designed for the 9mm Parabellum cartridge, the model was not adopted by the Czechoslovak military.

This wasn't enough to stop the success of the model. The high quality as well as the design innovation and excellence of the model was recognized by those outside the Eastern Bloc countries. In 1977 the CZ 75 entered large-scale production as an export-oriented model targeted primarily at western Europe.

The design was quickly embraced by customers worldwide; production and geographical distribution enjoyed considerable growth. In 1979 the huge sales potential of the CZ 75 was recognized and a decision was made to declassify the patents. CZ company documents record the change in status of the design patents, but for reasons that remain unknown, the status of the patents was never changed by the Industrial Property Office of Prague, and they remained officially classified until their expiration. Because the patents were never actually declassified there, was no protection for the design outside of the country.

The combination of no publicly-known patent protection and demand for the CZ 75 design led to the production of CZ 75 clones by several manufacturers outside of Czechoslovakia by the late 1980s. To date, the CZ 75 has been cloned or closely copied by manufacturers in the US, Great Britain, Turkey, Switzerland, Sudan, Philippines, North Korea, Israel, Italy, Czech Republic, China, Chile and probably others that aren't on the market yet.

The M1911, designed by John Browning, followed a much different route to flattery. The United States adopted the model in 1911. In addition to great design, timing played an important role in its success. The advent of WWI spread the manufacture of the M1911 to numerous U.S. manufacturers under contract for wartime production. The rights to manufacture were licensed to other countries as well.

The demand for John Browning's design continues today. The patents covering the original design have long since expired, allowing any company that so desires to try their hand at the M1911. Some clones are better quality than others; some variations put an emphasis on accuracy -- others on reliability or even cosmetics. Of course we believe the Dan Wesson-produced versions of the 1911 to be among the best quality 1911 variations ever produced. Dan Wesson Firearms (finally) became part of the CZ family in 2005 when the company was acquired by CZ-USA. Unbeknownst to any of the parties involved in the 2005 transaction, a relationship between the two companies was initiated 37 years earlier.

January 5th to August 21st 1968 is known to history as the Prague Spring. Many rights and freedoms restricted by the Soviets after World War II were returned to the citizens of Czechoslovakia during this brief season of change. It was also during this time period that an apparent agreement was made between Česká zbrojovka (CZ) and the founders of Dan Wesson Firearms to manufacture Dan Wesson handguns in CZ's Uherský Brod plant.

On August 21st, 1968 the Soviet Union and other Warsaw Pact countries invaded Czechoslovakia with 2,000 tanks and 200,000 soldiers. Though the details have been lost, it can be assumed that the invasion and subsequent occupation that ended the Prague Spring, also ended any hope of fulfilling the agreement between the two manufacturers.

A recently found entry from a CZUB official journal known as “The Chronicle" documented the forgotten beginnings of a partnership never realized.
About Dan Wesson Firearms:
Dan Wesson Firearms produces a premium line of 1911s and interchangeable barrel revolvers. In 1968, three years after the Wesson family sold Smith&Wesson, Dan Wesson, great-grandson of Smith&Wesson co-founder Daniel B. Wesson, partnered with Karl R. Lewis to manufacturer the Dan Wesson line of revolvers. The current line of Dan Wesson revolvers and 1911s are built in the same spirit of quality and innovation that inspired partnerships involving 2 men of the same name over a century apart.
Vance Schmid wins 2012 Bianchi Cup Production Division. Vance shot his way to the top of the production division with a score of 1887-118X using his CZ Custom SP-01 Shadow. CZ-USA Shooting Team member Sara Dunivin won top lady and best newcomer in the metallic division with her Dan Wesson PM9. CZ-USA’s own Alexandra Griffeth finished third lady in production division; also shooting a CZ SP-01 Shadow. Congratulations Vance, Sara and Alex!
The championship’s course of fire consists of 4 events: the practical, moving target, barricade and falling plate. Each event is shot with varying time restrictions from various distances. Speed and accuracy are both critical components for success at the competition.
The Bianchi Cup is recognized as one of the largest and most prestigious handgun competitions in the world.
